Value over time: It is conceivable over the 20 year everglades plan that if any of these fish survive then they could get to be 200 pounds in the wild (world record). Not considering inflation, with modest values, the roe could be 30 pounds and $9,500 at $20 an ounce. The meat could be $5 per pound at about $1,000. This would make each fish retail valued at $10,000 each from a $4.00 finger size, released into the wild. The research value would be much greater depending on how much science goes into the initiative. One would assume that the scientific community will escalate over the next 20 years. Each fish could be tracked with an on board transmitter and a history of that fishes travels could be logged into a data base. Over a 20 year period, the jaw bone (only bone in the fish) could be sliced and growth rings evaluated in a lab. These rings would include the pollution history coupled with the specific location history (logged data) of each selected fish. This would be much better than the very short term evaluations of the Gambusia mosquitofish bioconcentration kinetics standard. If only one paddlefish out of a million survives then even without the specific transmitter data, the information could be the only direct long term evaluation available that precludes the complicated accumulation within a food chain. The current short term evaluations of the Gambusia will be outdated by the long term evaluations of the paddlefish. As near as I can tell, on a truly grand scale then a $10M investment could easily yield $10B within a 10 year period if you want to factor in all the potentials of research, tourism, and ecology. This would be a nice retirement. Reality is that 99% of them would probably be eaten within a few years and the Chinese would get another good laugh. This could be equal to 1M frogs, 1M birds, 1M turtles, that would not get eaten, and what would you pay for them? If a breeding were established then this could be compounded over time.

The Oklahoma project netted 1 million dollars from 1,700 females that were sacrificed for their eggs and meat. Total 7,000 pounds of caviar, 5 pounds per fish, and only $150 a pound ( retail $300); the million dollar mark was easy. Methods of harvesting eggs have been developed at the University of Kentucky that would allow the fish to live for another harvest 2 years later. These proven numbers might explain why there is such a hidden political agenda about these fish.

Advanced immune systems: "Summary-.An identical pentapeptide, Asp-Ile-Val-Ile(Leu)-Thr, was found in both heavy and light chains from the 19S immunoglobulin of Polyodon spathula (paddlefish). This sequence is homologous with the N-terminal sequences of mouse and human kappa chains. The unblocked N-terminus of the paddlefish heavy chain is like that previously reported for the leopard shark. The data lend support to theories for a common origin of genes for immunoglobulin chains and to the hypothesis that unique preserved sequences in the variable half of light chains have been conserved during speciation because of their function in maintaining the tertiary structure of antibodies ". Frankly this information is over my head. It does appear that the paddlefish has much more going for it than just a regular fish. You could grow an entire human arm or leg on the side of this fish. Tissue engineering, allows laboratories to grow skin and cartilage for transplant in humans. Paddlefish are a cartilage based fish that never get cancer. Can you hear me now?

There are a lot of unanswered prehistoric questions: Why will a common roach not rot? Why will my Paddlefish not get sick no matter how much I abuse them?

Herbivorous to 100 pound meal 10% rule: "When energy is transferred to the next trophic level, typically only 10% of it is used to build new biomass, becoming stored energy (the rest going to metabolic processes). As such, in a pyramid of productivity each step will be 10% the size of the previous step (100, 10, 1, 0.1, 0.01, 0.001 etc.)". Based on this concept then the paddlefish represents a gigantic leap from the crude micro foods to being food for alligators or man. All the food animals between are bypassed. It only makes sense that the simpler food chain is the most efficient with a minimum of losses. What does this mean? Ecological pyramid Do the math!

The biological excretions as algae pellets serve as food for the micro-organisms that in turn serve as food for the very same fish. Daphnia as an example; are such that the more they get eaten then the more they reproduce, and the more they reproduce then the more Algae they consume, less means more are needed in the natural order of things. Too many Daphnia in the population and the Daphnia stop reproducing.

Researchers have accomplished a great deal in this generation to help preserve endangered species. SEE: Michael H. Hofmann or Glenn Northcutt

Associated Behavior Analysis: Paddlefish can be herded like cattle? Florida canals, as deep slow moving channels, will be a magnet to these fish. Paddlefish are constantly feeding and moving at the same time and will naturally position themselves head first into the stream flow. This positioning saves energy, provides the best oxygen levels, and a greater food supply. Paddlefish will avoid anything made of steel because of the magnetic properties. A simple coral made out of thin steel pipe might allow a boat to round up the herd, driving them into a netted area, particularly at night when food is attracted to a light. Experiments with different frequencies might allow a finer manipulation of luring or persuading from a great distance. Food and oxygen supply will probably be the number one lure. Maybe a plastic tarp covering the steel gates of the lock will tell them it is ok to go through, who knows? There seems to be a lot of room for creative ideas and experiments that have not been accomplished in the past. Simply raising and lowering the water levels in the everglades could provide the incentive to spawn. Fish movements could provide a leading indicator of environmental problems or changes before they are immediately evident. Fish with imbedded transmitters could be shunned by the other fish or they could become the lead fish of the pack. Tide in and tide out could get confusing to a fish that is programmed for north and south. They could all stay in specific locations or they could all end up in Lake Okeechobee. Chances are the fish will avoid salty water and stay away from the ocean but they could travel in and out of certain areas where the water is changing. There is no way to predict many aspects of their traveling because there is no record for the Florida Everglades. Acoustic transmitters imbedded into the fish at release will allow scientists to study these movements with a network of solar powered receivers transmitting data to satellite. This same electronics system can serve many functions for the general monitoring of Everglades conditions such as water parameters and Manatee movements. I do know that South Florida Water Management has transmitter stations already installed and they are limited with old technology. My interview with them resulted in the questions of elevated height, alligators, and computer software.

Mission-Related Spinoffs: The very same companies that deal with the paddlefish can also deal with other issues. Some potential business benefits might be:

  • Grand filter experiments "Grass Ladders"
  • Natural plant and fish culture "Green Jobs"
  • Expanded Caviar exploitation "Pay Checks"
  • Tourist Concessions - little plastic paddlefish
  • Other projects involving telemetry "Shared Resources"
  • Oil and food production from processing scraps
  • Wild Life and land conservation enhancement

High Tech : There is no such thing as global warming in a contemporary sense. The term is synonymous with future shock (One red cent on Amazon) from an old socialistic perspective. The politicians that promote this lie are socialist at heart so it might somehow be real to them in their fake little world. The concept is a manipulation of ignorance and nothing more. Tree ring evaluations provide the proof but the current socialistic powers will not allow the truth to come out. Science should concentrate on providing solutions for real threats, bridging the large gap between creativity and science. This combination of creativity and science is the basis for business economic success. By themselves they are relatively non productive, no matter how hard they try, accept from an entertainment perspective. The term "High Tech" was coined to distinguish a level of technology that is above "Low Tech" so it is all relative to the job at hand. High Tech; is a reflective level of a combination of science, and creativity, not just simply complicated technology. The future is actually in our past if we can learn from the past.
